Greenland's Doomsday Glacier: a ticking time bomb

The Doomsday Glacier is on the brink of collapse, and when it does, it could cause a global catastrophe.

That's the warning from scientists who say the glacier, which sits on the west coast of Greenland, is being held back by just a few remaining "fingernails."

If those nails were to give way, the glacier would release a massive amount of water into the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in a rise in sea level of up to 20 feet (6 meters).

The Doomsday Glacier is just one of many glaciers in Greenland that are melting at an accelerating rate due to climate change.

While the collapse of the glacier would be catastrophic, it's not likely to happen overnight.

"It's not going to be like the movies, where the glacier suddenly calves and the tsunami wipes out New York City," said Branden Studeny,

The Doomsday Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in Greenland, and its collapse would have far-reaching consequences.

"If the Doomsday Glacier were to collapse, it would be an environmental disaster of global proportions," said David Holland.

Holland said the rise in sea level from the glacier's collapse would be enough to inundate coastal cities around the world, including New York, London, and Shanghai.

"This would be a global disaster that would dwarf any other in human history," he said.
